Oil, air, fuel and cabin filters

Filters are the heart of every service. The oil filter is changed with every oil change; the air filter keeps dust out of the engine; the fuel filter (especially on diesels) protects the injectors; and the cabin or pollen filter cleans the air you breathe and stops the windows misting. We match each one to your registration, because the same model can use two or three different filters depending on the engine.

Engine oil, gear oil and lubricants

Our oil wall carries Comma and Exopro engine oils in the common grades (0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-40 and more), plus gear oils, ATF, power steering fluid and brake fluid. Buying the right grade is only half of it: modern engines also need the right manufacturer approval (VW 504/507, MB 229.51, Ford WSS and so on) and the right low-ash specification for cars with a diesel particulate filter. We look up the specification for your car, not just the viscosity.

Brake pads, discs, shoes and fluid

Brake pads and discs for most cars and vans, plus rear shoes, fitting kits, wear sensors and brake fluid. Discs and pads should be replaced in axle pairs, and many cars need a specific pad for their caliper, so we always check fitment against the registration. Brake cleaner and copper or ceramic grease are on the counter too.

Spark plugs and glow plugs

Petrol engines need spark plugs changing at set intervals (anything from 20,000 to 60,000 miles, depending on the engine); diesels use glow plugs that help them start from cold. A diesel that is hard to start on a cold morning or smokes white for a moment is often a glow plug on the way out.

Auxiliary belts, timing belt kits, hoses and gaskets

Auxiliary (fan) belts, tensioners, coolant hoses, clips and gaskets. Timing belt kits, water pumps and other major-service parts can be ordered in for your exact engine. A timing belt is changed by mileage or age, whichever comes first, and missing it can wreck an engine, so check the interval in your service book.

Service kits put together for your car

Doing a service at home? Tell us the registration and whether it is an interim or full service, and we will put the oil, filters, plugs and sump washer together for you. Workshops can order the same kits for delivery on a trade account.

Buying guide

What parts are needed for a car service?

ServiceUsually everyTypical parts
Interim6 months or 6,000 milesEngine oil, oil filter, sump plug washer, screenwash top-up
Full12 months or 12,000 milesInterim parts plus air filter, cabin filter, and fuel filter or spark plugs as scheduled
Major24 months or 24,000 milesFull parts plus spark plugs, fuel filter, brake fluid and coolant as scheduled

Every manufacturer is different, so always check the schedule in your service book; some cars run longer, variable intervals.

Can you service a car yourself?

Yes, if you are comfortable working on a car and have the right tools: axle stands, a socket set, an oil filter wrench, a drain pan and a torque wrench as a minimum. An oil and filter change is a good first job. Leave brakes and timing belts to a garage unless you have done them before. Keep your receipts and record the service in the book: a documented DIY service still counts for the car’s history.

Is a service the same as an MOT?

No. An MOT is a yearly legal check that the car meets road safety and emissions standards; it does not replace any parts. A service is maintenance: changing oil, filters and wear parts to keep the car reliable. Servicing is not a legal requirement, but a car that is serviced on time is far more likely to pass its MOT.

Engine oil grades explained

In a grade like 5W-30, the first number with the W (winter) is how easily the oil flows when cold; lower is thinner and protects faster at start-up. The second number is its thickness at running temperature. The approval code on the back of the bottle matters just as much, which is why we look up the oil for your registration.

Questions we get asked

Which parts do I need for a car service?

An interim service is usually an oil and oil filter change. A full service adds the air filter, cabin filter and often the fuel filter and spark plugs. Tell us your registration and the service you are doing and we will put the kit together.

Do you sell brake pads and discs?

Yes, for most makes and models, along with brake fluid, shoes and fitting parts. We check fitment against your registration before you buy.

Which oil does my car take?

Give us your registration. We look up the grade and the manufacturer approval your engine needs, and whether it needs a low-ash oil for a diesel particulate filter.

How often should I change my oil?

Follow your service book. Most cars are every 12 months or 10,000 to 12,000 miles; lots of short trips or towing are a reason to change it sooner.

Can you get parts that are not on the shelf?

Yes. Timing belt kits, water pumps, clutches and other less common parts can be ordered in. Call us on 023 8024 3300 with your registration for a price and a time.

Can I order parts for collection?

Yes. Call us with your registration and we will have the parts ready when you arrive.
